Gabions for slope stabilization - Fill the second row of baskets correctly with stones

Building a durable and beautiful landscape doesn't always require heavy machinery, but it does require a lot of patience and dedication. In this video, I take you through my process of hand-filling the second row of gabion baskets to create a stable, aesthetically pleasing retaining wall for a backyard slope. Witness how steady progress and attention to detail can transform a challenging hillside into a structured and functional garden feature.

Throughout this update, I share the specific techniques I use to ensure the gabion wall is both strong and visually appealing. From connecting the upper baskets with spirals to hand-sorting every stone for the front face, I explain why manual labor is sometimes the best way to achieve a high-quality result. You will see how I manage the tension of the baskets using internal spacers and how I backfill soil simultaneously to provide the necessary counterpressure against the hillside.

Logistics are a major part of this project, especially since I am working without an excavator. I demonstrate my custom wheelbarrow setup designed to transport heavy stones across seventy meters of bumpy terrain without losing the load. Since the path is mostly downhill, I used a board and clamps to keep the buckets secure during transit. Whether you are a DIY enthusiast or looking for inspiration for your next landscaping project, this video highlights the importance of problem-solving and persistence in outdoor construction.
