In this video, I show you how Heating a 125-Year-Old Damp Basement with AC (DIY) helps dehumidify my home. My house was built in 1900, and despite extensive waterproofing and renovation efforts, the spa and sauna area in the basement remains cool and damp. To solve this, I decided to install a modern split air conditioner that not only cools but also provides efficient heating and powerful dehumidification.
I take you through the entire installation process of this Quick Connect system, from mounting the indoor unit to setting up the outdoor unit on the limestone facing. This project is about more than just temperature control; it is an experiment to see if I can permanently dry out the thick walls of this old wash house using an energy-efficient heat pump.
Here are the key steps and features I cover in this installation:
✅ Project Overview: I explain the history of the room, the moisture issues caused by the clay pit foundation, and why I chose an air conditioner over traditional heating methods.
✅ Installation Preparation: I demonstrate how to position the indoor unit and drill the necessary 63mm breakthrough through the thick exterior wall.
✅ Electrical Setup: I detail the power supply requirements, showing how to run cables from the outdoor unit back inside to a junction box with a Shelly device for monitoring power consumption.
✅ Quick Connect System: I show you how to connect the pre-filled refrigerant lines without needing a vacuum pump, making this a manageable DIY project.
✅ Outdoor Assembly: I walk you through mounting the outdoor unit on vibration dampers and concealing the lines with a clean cable duct installation.
✅ Efficiency Goals: I discuss the heating factor of the unit, which generates 3 kilowatt-hours of thermal energy for every 1 kilowatt-hour of electricity, and my plans to track its performance.
