If you have a light fixture that has the mainline from the circuit breaker box coming into the fixture box then you'll need to send power down to the light switch. This can be a confusing process. However, if this is your situation then this video is going to help.
Watch this video to find out how a fixture box looks when it has power coming from the mainline. In addition, you'll see how to send that power down to the light switch and back up to the fixture so that the switch controls the fixture.
Be sure you have the power turned off and follow your local code laws and proper safety procedures. You may also need to consult an electrician.
