Russian analyst: 2023 was 'surprisingly good for Putin' | Conflict Zone

With crucial military and financial support for Ukraine held up in the US and EU due to internal politics, and Kyiv’s counteroffensive having failed to make significant progress, will 2024 see Ukraine concede to Russia? Shortly before President Volodymyr Zelenskyy left Washington empty-handed, Vladimir Putin was feted in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia despite an international warrant for arrest on war crimes charges. The war in Gaza has drawn attention, weapons and ammunition from Ukraine's war for survival.

Moscow has directed massive resources into its military industrial complex and looks set to turn that into more capability just as support from Ukraine's Western backers is beginning to waver. Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia-Eurasia Center, joins Tim Sebastian to look at where the war is headed.
